Spout Magazine began as a quarterly journal in 1989 as an attempt to build a community of writers in Central Minnesota. As the magazine grew in circulation and reputation, the community also grew to include the best experimental writers both nationally and internationally. Spout Magazine ceased publication in 2015, although back issues are still available at select Spout events. The same commitment to to experimentation and inclusion is carried forward in the work of Spout Press.
