Emily Graves' Ballad of The Breathless, a poetry anthology featuring the art of Jessica Dickinson, and is culled from several self-published chap books and over 20 never-before-published poems.
Emily Graves and artist Jessica Dickinson began collaborating on self- published chapbooks in 1994, soon after they had graduated from Minnesota's Perpich Center for Arts Education. Four books, In the Trunk of The Female, 1994; A Rare Occurrence in Which We Are Entirely Permeable, 1995; Learning The Art of Motion, 1996 and Thirsting for the Big Scrub, 1998, and, one screen printed hand bound edition (SILENCE: I Have Not Finished Beginning, 1997) were made in the span of their college and graduate studies. Their most recent book, Remember The Absurdity and The Monkeys of The Street, was created in 2000 after extensive travels while living together in Brooklyn, NY.
Emily Graves was born in New Ulm, MN in 1975. She has a B.A. from the Honors Program at the University of Minnesota, and an M.A. from New York University.
Graves has spent many of her adult years traveling and living outside of the country in such varied places as Central America, Europe, the U.K., Thailand and South America and these experiences have informed much of her later work. In addition to her collaboration with Dickinson, she has published poems, short shorts and short stories in several anthologies and literary magazines.
A musician, as well as a teacher and healer, Graves has also finished one full-length CD, A Wolf Speaks. Her work has been used as the base of many artistic endeavors, including dance and theater pieces, short films, music and paintings. She is currently focusing on fiction and is finishing work on another CD.
Jessica Dickinson was born in St. Paul, MN in 1975 and has been making art in Brooklyn, NY since 1999. She received her BFA in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 1997 and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan in 1999.
She has had recent solo exhibitions at Brooklyn Fire Proof, project space (2007) and Bas Fisher Invitational in Miami, FL (2006), and has been included in group exhibitions at Max Protetch, Derek Eller, ZieherSmith, Lombard-Freid Projects, Andrew Kreps, and Ace Gallery in New York, and Cranbrook Museum of Art in Michigan, among others. Dickinson was awarded a studio at The Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation Space Program 2001-02, received a grant from Change, Inc. in 2003.
